Polish president appoints new sports minister

Polish President Lech Kaczynski appointed Elzbieta Jakubiak sports minister on Monday noon.

Jakubiak has been also appointed coordinator of Poland's preparations for Euro 2012 Football Championship. The president stressed he recommended her for the job.

The Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski described Jakubiak as an expert at great challenges and great tasks, Polish PAP news agency reported.

Before the ceremony a minute of silence was held to honor the victims of the tragic accident of a Polish bus in France on Sunday, in which 26 Polish pilgrims died and 24 others injured.

Until Monday, Jakubiak was head of the Presidential Cabinet. She will be replaced by Maciej Lopinski. Jakubiak replaced Tomasz Lipiec who resigned in early July following reports of corruption practices at the Central Sports Centre.
